The sanctuary is a sacred place. The General Instruction to
the Roman Missal states: "It is of the greatest importance that the
celebration of the Mass, the Lord's Supper, be so arranged that the ministers
and the faithful may take their own proper part in it and thus gain its fruits fully."
Twelve rows of pews were removed, along with the communion railing, and
replaced with scarlet upholstered chairs to facilitate the celebration of the Mass.
The chairs surround the altar suggesting a congregation similar to the Last Supper.
The sanctuary floor is tessellated, laid in a delightful pattern of six imported marbles.
Casual excursions through the sanctuary area are taboo.
